The natural world is filled with a vast array of creatures, some of which possess truly unique and bizarre appearances. Here’s a list of some of the strangest looking animals from around the globe:

Proboscis Monkey

Known for its large, protruding nose, the proboscis monkey is a sight to behold. This distinctive feature is more pronounced in males and is thought to be used to attract mates.

Aye-aye

A type of lemur found in Madagascar, the aye-aye is notable for its large, bulging eyes, big ears, and a long, thin middle finger it uses to tap on trees to find grubs.

Narwhal

Often referred to as the “unicorn of the sea,” the narwhal is a type of whale with a long, spiral tusk protruding from its head, which is actually an elongated upper left canine.

Blobfish

Voted the world’s ugliest animal, the blobfish lives deep in the waters off the coasts of Australia and Tasmania. Its gelatinous body allows it to withstand the high pressure at these depths.

Axolotl

Also known as the Mexican walking fish, this amphibian is unique for its feathery external gills and its ability to regenerate limbs. It has a wide, smiling face that adds to its peculiar charm.

Tarsier

With its massive, goggle-eyed stare, the tarsier is a small primate from Southeast Asia. Its eyes are each as large as its brain, helping it to see at night.

Star-nosed Mole

This mole has a distinctive star-shaped set of appendages at the tip of its snout, which it uses as a touch organ to feel its way around. It’s one of the most unusual looking creatures on earth.

Dumbo Octopus

Named after Disney’s Dumbo because of its ear-like fins, the Dumbo octopus lives at extreme depths and has a peculiar, gelatinous body.

Goblin Shark

With a protruding snout and a jaw that extends when it feeds, the goblin shark is often referred to as a “living fossil” due to its ancient lineage.

Sunda Colugo or Flying Lemur

Despite its name, it’s not a lemur nor can it fly. Instead, it glides between trees in Southeast Asia, and its large, soulful eyes and unusual facial structure make it quite distinctive.
