10 Vintage Activities TikTok Made Trendy Again

It’s no secret that TikTok is one of the most popular social media platforms today. Often, when kids “discover something new” on TikTok, it’s not actually new, but instead, a skill or pastime practiced generations ago, and today’s youth are just hearing about it.

In a time where generational traditions aren’t valued or passed down the way they used to be, TikToks ability to influence and reignite interest in various hobbies and activities might actually be doing the world some good.

These trends have not only captured the imagination of viewers worldwide but have also encouraged many to try their hand at these activities, fostering communities of enthusiasts and novices alike.

1. Sourdough Bread Making

The art of making sourdough bread from a starter saw a significant resurgence during the pandemic, with many people taking up the challenge of baking their own bread at home.

This has continued to grow in popularity with creators teaching the steps from beginning to delicious end, getting millions of views on their videos.

2. Gardening

Gardening became a therapeutic outlet for many, with TikTok users sharing their journeys of transforming their spaces into green oases, offering tips on everything from starting a vegetable garden to indoor plant care.

You can binge-watch gardening videos to your heart’s content without much effort. Be careful not to get too carried away (like me) and rush out to turn half your yard into a garden.

3. Canning and Preserving

The traditional skills of canning and preserving food have also seen renewed interest, with tutorials on making jams, pickles, and other preserved goods becoming popular.

This is especially popular with the prepping community working on building up their stockpiles for when SHTF.

4. DIY Home Renovation and Decorating

DIY home projects, including renovation and decorating ideas, gained traction. Users showcased their transformations and offered hacks and tips for beautifying living spaces on a budget.

While some of these DIYs are honestly pretty terrible, you can sometimes find some really great ideas!

5. Thrift Shopping and Upcycling

TikTok has significantly promoted sustainability through thrift shopping and upcycling, inspiring viewers to find second-hand gems and repurpose old items into something new and stylish.

When I was a teen, I wouldn’t have ever considered shopping at a thrift store, but today’s teens love it! My kids check out thrift stores even when we travel, which is fun.

6. Roller Skating

Roller skating made a huge comeback, with videos of people gliding on streets and in parks, showing off tricks, and sharing the joy and freedom associated with the activity.

This is one trend you wont find me getting involved in though. What a disaster that would be.

7. Crafting and Art Projects

From painting and drawing to more niche crafts like resin art, macramé, and pottery, TikTok has become a platform for sharing creative projects and inspiring others to start their own.

I’m continuously impressed with the creativity and ability of the artists on this platform.

8. Cooking and Cocktail Making

Beyond baking, TikTok has sparked interest in cooking and mixology. Its quick, easy-to-follow recipes and cocktail-making videos encourage people to explore new cuisines and drinks.

Warning: never get on food tok while you are hungry.

9. Dance and Exercise Challenges

While not forgotten, dance and exercise found a new platform on TikTok, with challenges encouraging users to stay active, learn new routines, and share their progress.

Remember when we were kids, and we practiced and performed dance routines for our parents? This reminds me of that, but on a much larger scale, and parents aren’t forced into sitting on the couch for an hour pretending to love the routines.

10. BookTok

The BookTok community has revitalized interest in reading. Users recommend books, share reviews, and create content around their favorite reads, leading to noticeable increases in book sales.

How can more reading be a bad thing?
