8 Reasons Why Labrador Retrievers Are The Best Dog Breed

I’ve had a variety of dog breeds throughout my life, both as family pets and now as an adult with my own, and I can confidently say Labrador Retrievers are the best. Keep reading as I highlight what makes Labs the top dog breed in the world.

Adorable As Puppies

There’s nothing quite like a Lab puppy. They’re not only adorable, but there’s something irresistibly funny about the way they walk, run, and play when they’re so small. Plus, their puppy breath is the best. 

I got my Lab at 12 weeks old, and I’ll never forget how cute and playful she was at just a few pounds.

Come In A Variety Of Colors

Some dog breeds come in just one color, like golden retrievers, but with labs, you can pick from various colors. The three primary colors are yellow, brown, and black. 

But did you know there are also labs that are silver, red fox, champagne, and charcoal? Some of these aren’t accepted by the American Kennel Club, but they still exist and are incredibly beautiful dogs.

Mild Temperament

One of my favorite things about my black Labrador Retriever, Clover, is her gentle temperament. She’s great with kids and seniors and has an overall calming presence. I never have to worry about her biting anyone, and it’s amazing knowing just how relaxed she is.

Great With Kids

This ties into their mild temperament, and while not all Labs are precisely the same, most are fantastic with children.

I have a one-year-old daughter, and my Lab is wonderful with her! Even when my daughter was a baby, I never had to worry about our dog biting or misbehaving. She was always gentle.

Now that my daughter is a toddler, our Lab happily lets her play, hug her, and even share her toys. Our Lab is also great with other kids; we never have to worry about her being aggressive.

Very Trainable

There’s a reason Labs are commonly used as service dogs, emotional support animals, in security roles, and even in the military: They’re incredibly trainable. 

One of my favorite things about our Labrador Retriever is how smart she is. We crate-trained her as a puppy and taught her various tricks early on, and she still remembers them all as an adult.

It makes life so much easier, whether we’re out in public or at home. She’s well-trained, and we never have to worry about her damaging furniture, having accidents indoors, or anything like that.

Loyal

Labs are incredibly loyal and always aim to make their owners happy. This loyalty shows in many ways, but one of my favorites is how in tune our Lab is with my emotions. When I’m feeling down, she’ll come up to lick me or lay beside me, wanting to comfort me because she cares so much. 

You can also see their loyalty in how they behave outdoors. While every Lab is different, ours never wants to run away. We can leave her outside and watch through the window, knowing she won’t wander off. It’s truly amazing.

Sociable

Dogs react differently in various situations. Some may growl and act aggressively, some get nervous and run away, others love to snip and bark, while some are incredibly social, always happy with their tails wagging like they’re about to take off. Most Labs fall into that last category. 

They’re such friendly, social dogs that love greeting everyone. This not only makes things easy for us as owners, but it’s great for others, too—who wouldn’t love a happy Lab coming up to say hello?

Adaptable

Last but certainly not least, Labs are incredibly adaptable, which is one of my favorite traits about them. I love that they can be completely relaxed, lounging on the sofa, or bursting with excitement when it’s time to play fetch, swim in a lake, or visit the dog park. It’s truly the best of both worlds.

Their adaptability is especially great as a parent because some days, we can spend hours outside, but other days, whether due to crazy kids or bad weather, we’re stuck indoors. Either way, most labs are happy to go with the flow.
