The other pass does not offer access to Bear Lake Road but does grant access to the rest of the park including Trail Ridge road and Old Fall river road.

During the summer (especially late summer) the parks’ scenic drives, Trail Ridge Road, and Old Fall River will usually be open. Keep in mind that snow can occur at higher elevations even in the summer, so the roads may suddenly close due to weather.

During the summer you’ll have access to all of the visitor’s centers, as well as Ranger-led hikes and talks.

Campgrounds and nearby attractions will be open during the summer as well, and if you are looking for tours, you are sure to have plenty of options.

One of the best times to visit Rocky Mountain National Park is in September when the Elk are in rut. During this time, the males can be seen bugling and fighting for mates. This is a sight you don’t want to miss! The Elk are plentiful and can be aggressive, so be sure and give them their space, and observe from a safe distance.

If you are staying in Estes Park, you will likely even see the Elk roaming through town. We saw many on the golf course, and some just walking down the streets in town. We could hear them bugling from miles away.

Weather in the fall can be unpredictable. In one day we experienced temperatures ranging from 38•F to 82•F. As in the summer, afternoons were more volatile, and we experienced rain and thunder every day around 2 pm.

In the early fall, you’ll still have access to visitor centers, ranger programs, hiking trails, Trail Ridge Road, and Old Fall River Road. Many tours are still operational during this time.

Trail Ridge Road closes in October as does Old Fall River Road.
