I Finally Stayed At Sun River Resort in Central Oregon, And Now I Get The Hype

I didn’t realize before visiting that Sunriver isn’t just a resort. It’s its own little community nestled in Central Oregon, about 20 minutes south of Bend.

Picture towering pine trees, wide-open skies, and a laid-back mountain vibe with just the right amount of luxury. At the heart of it all is Sunriver Resort, which anchors the area with cozy lodge rooms, spacious vacation rentals, golf courses, restaurants, pools, a spa, and so much more.

I stayed in a Lodge Village room, and it was massive. The fireplace added the perfect touch of mountain-cozy, the bed was beyond comfortable, and the bathroom was fantastic. But the real highlight? A huge window with a peaceful view—and a herd of elk wandering right outside.

You can also choose a whole home rental in the area if you bring more people. On this trip, I was alone, so my room worked perfectly, and would have still been great for two people. No matter where you stay, a shuttle service gets you around the resort. You can text them anytime; they will pick you up and take you to a different part of the resort. It’s also quite walkable in nice weather and gorgeous along the walking paths.

I visited in early spring, just after a snowstorm, so there was still snow on the ground, making everything feel like a winter wonderland. The lodge was warm and welcoming, with roaring fireplaces and comfy seating areas encouraging you to linger.

The crowd was a mix of families, couples, and older guests, but the best part was the overall vibe: upscale but not pretentious. You didn’t need to dress up; no one was trying too hard. It felt like the kind of place where you can truly relax, be yourself, and still feel like you’re somewhere special.

Things to Do in Sunriver

One of the best things about Sunriver is how much there is to do without ever needing to leave the property.

• Spa & Hot Tubs: The spa at Sunriver Resort is the definition of relaxation. You can book a treatment or just lounge in the outdoor hot tubs with mountain views. It’s the kind of peaceful recharge you don’t realize you need until you’re soaking it all in.
• Pools: Even in chilly weather, the outdoor pools and hot tubs were getting plenty of love. There’s something pretty magical about swimming with snow on the ground.
• Biking & Exploring: Many guests biked the paved trails that wind through the forest. With over 40 miles of trails, it’s the best way to get around (and one of the most fun).
• Stargazing: The Sunriver Nature Center & Observatory is a hidden gem. Sunriver is a certified International Dark Sky Place, so the stargazing is unreal on a clear night.

Where to Eat in Sunriver

With 11 onsite dining options, foodies are in for a treat. I ate at the main Lodge restaurant, and everything we tried was phenomenal. A few standout dishes? The crab tagliatelle was buttery and flavorful, the burrata plate was fresh and bright, the rainbow carrots were surprisingly craveable, and the cookie skillet for dessert was the kind of thing you don’t share (even if you say you will).

The drinks were phenomenal, and they had fun specialty drinks too. I had a fresh huckleberry cream soda, which was so much fun. I’ve been thinking about it for months, wishing I could have another.

There’s something for every taste here, from casual eats to fine dining, and you’ll find just as many families in hiking boots as couples celebrating special occasions.
