13 Biggest Ski Resorts in the World
If you had to guess, where would you say the biggest ski resort in the world is located? You would probably say that it’s somewhere in Canada, Colorado, or Utah, but you’d be wrong!
In this list, I’ll cover the biggest ski resorts in the world and I can assure you they’re much larger than you think they would be.
Les 3 Vallées, France
Coming in at number one, we have Les 3 Vallées in France. It has 25,916 acres, which is bigger than the top five biggest ski resorts in North America combined! Not only is this the biggest ski resort in the world, it’s also one of the best! This giant ski area combines four ski resorts to make one mega-resort that’s interlinked with gondolas and ski lifts. The four resorts it combines are Val Thorens, Les Menuires, Méribel, and Courchevel. It has 156 lifts and 372 miles of skiable terrain.
Here’s something that will blow your American mind. During the high season, a ticket costs $80 for an adult and $65 for a child! Think of how much a resort of this size would cost in America! There’s no way you could do the entire thing in a single day, which means that you should leave yourself at least one day per valley or 3 days in total.
Portes du Soleil, France
With 360 miles of skiable terrain, 165 lifts, and a combined 12 accessible resorts, this place is absolutely massive. It stretches from France all the way to Switzerland, starting at Morzine, France, and ending in Champéry, Switzerland. For a day pass, it’s $75 for an adult and $55 for a child.
Here, you can literally ski from one country to the next, which is not something that you can do almost anywhere else in the world! They also have free rock concerts here all winter long where some of the best French and Swiss bands perform. If you’re looking for a good time and unlimited terrain, this is the place for you!
Sella Ronda, Italy
This ski area in Italy has 267 miles of skiable terrain, 193 lifts, and covers four resorts that are all interconnected. They include Val Gardena, Alta Badia, Belvedere/Col Rodella/Ciampac/Buffaure – Canazei/Campitello/Alba/Pozza di Fassa, and Arabba/Marmolada.
A day pass costs $90 for adults, which is pretty expensive for a European day pass, but with how large the resort is and the location right in the heart of the Dolomites, it’s 100% worth the price. There’s even a 24-mile ski run that will take you through all four of the resorts on an adventure you’ll never forget!
Paradiski, France
Now back over to France for Paradiski. It has 264 miles of skiable terrain and 164 lifts. The resort connects over 20 French villages and has two glaciers that are part of the ski area!
This area combines the two resorts of La Plagne and Les Arcs/Peisey-Vallandry, which you will have to buy two different day passes for because there’s no combined day pass for both resorts. A day pass will cost you around $70 per ski resort with discounted packages for multi-day passes. There’s also the world’s longest cable car that connects the two resorts called the Vanoise Express. This ski area is truly incredible and has views, unlike any other resort.
Les 4 Vallées, Switzerland
With over 250 miles of skiable terrain and 93 lifts, this is the place that people are talking about when they say they want to ski in the Swiss Alps. This ski area covers a total of six resorts, which are Verbier, Bruson, La Tzoumaz, Nendaz, Veysonnaz, and Thyon.
It’s the largest ski resort in Switzerland and costs $100 for a day pass, which is on the more expensive side when it comes to ski resorts in Europe. This ski area has lots of space for beginners looking to learn how to ski and places where the most elite skiers in the world go to throw themselves off huge drops and cliffs.
Via Lattea/Milky Way, Italy & France
This ski area also has about 250 miles of skiable terrain but only has 73 lifts. This was the location of the 2006 Winter Olympics, and in 2030 will be where the Winter Olympic Alpine events will happen. If a place is good enough to host the Winter Olympics, I think that it’s good enough for me!
This resort starts in the Sestrière in Italy and goes to the French Montgenèvre. It’s around $60 for a day pass here, which is a great price for a place of this size and Olympic history!
Skicircus, Austria
Skicircus is the biggest ski area in Austria and also goes by the name Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn (glad they decided to go with Skicircus). With 170 miles of skiable terrain and 69 lifts, you’ll never get bored while you’re here.
Since this is outside of the French/Italy section of the ski resorts on this list, it is a little more expensive, at $80 per person. Austria is such an amazing country and if you are looking for a place to get to know a country’s culture and have a great time in the mountains, then this is your place!
Matterhorn Ski Paradise, Switzerland/Italy
Can you imagine being able to ski with a view of the most iconic mountain in the world, the Matterhorn? Well, you can! Matterhorn Ski Paradise has 200 miles of skiable terrain and extends from the adorable town of Zermatt, Switzerland, to the Italian Aosta Valley. There are 51 lifts in this resort, some of which will take you all the way up to 13,000 feet above sea level!
It’s around $120 for a day pass here, but where else in the world can you have a view like this while you ski? It’s like if there was a ski resort at the base of Everest or something! If this place isn’t on your ski bucket list, you need to reevaluate your list.
Ski Arlberg, Austria
With over seven towns in one massive resort, St. Anton/St. Christoph/Stuben/Lech/Zürs/Warth/Schröcken – Ski Arlberg is the second largest ski area in Austria. It has 120 miles of skiable terrain and 85 lifts.
It costs $80 for a day pass and has ski towns that you can stay in that are for party people, and for people who want to relax. Like all places in Austria, this ski area is easily accessible by train so you have no excuse not to come here!
Val d’Isere-Tignes, France
With 190 miles of skiable terrain and 85 lifts, Val d’Isere-Tignes is a massive resort. This resort is also located near a glacier that you can ski by in the winter, or hike to during the summer. This ski area is also one of the most famous places for freeriding, so if you’re into that you should come check it out.
It’s $70 for a day pass, which makes this a pretty average-priced ski resort that has a lot to offer!
Alpe d’Huez and Les Deux Alpes, France
Once the gondola that will connect the Alpe d’Huez and Les Deux Alpes ski resorts is completed, it will become the second largest ski area in France behind Les 3 Vallées. Alpe d’Huez has 155 miles of skiable terrain with 69 lifts, and Les Deux Alpes has 125 miles of skiable terrain with 44 lifts, meaning that when the gondola is complete, there will be 280 miles of skiable terrain and 113 lifts. Both of these ski areas are just outside the adorable city of Grenoble, France.
It currently costs $65 for a day pass at Alpe d’Huez and $65 for a day pass at Les Deux Alpes. However, if you buy a six-day pass at one of the resorts, you can do two days of the six days at the other location. The gondola should be finished in the winter of 2025, so keep an eye out!
Whistler Blackcomb, B.C.
Whistler Blackcomb is one of the most famous ski resorts in the world. It has 8,171 acres, 125 miles of skiable terrain, and 27 lifts. It doesn’t really have the infrastructure to accommodate the massive crowds that flock here every winter, but people just keep coming. I’ve seen videos on TikTok of hour-long lines just to get on the first lift! It is the closest resort to Vancouver, so this also probably plays a role. It’s also the closest thing to the Alps in North America and even has a cute little Alpine town like in Europe. Whistler is also considered to have the third-best terrain park in the world, which just increases its popularity!
At $220 for a day pass, it seems like they are trying to price people out of coming here but people just keep coming! Seems like they either need to expand the resort, get some more lifts, or have another resort open in the Canadian Rockies that will spread out some of the crowds.
Park City, U.S.A.
At 7,300 acres and 155 miles of skiable terrain with 42 lifts, this is the largest ski resort in America and the second largest in North America. If you don’t know, Utah has the best snow in the world. The way that it’s dry and fluffy makes it the perfect powder to ski or snowboard. If powder is not your thing, no worries! This is also one of the best ski resorts in America for its terrain parks.
This resort is, however, for the elite, rich, and famous. At $300 for a day pass, your checkbook is going to be hurting after a few days here, especially if you stay in Deer Valley, Park City, or any of the other mountain towns in this area.
