I was born and raised in the South, and there’s something truly magical about it. With its warm hospitality, mouthwatering comfort food, and a mix of vibrant cities, scenic mountains, and charming beach towns, the South has something to offer everyone.

Here’s a curated list of the most breathtaking destinations you must experience in the South.

1. Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston is my absolute favorite coastal town in the South. I’ve visited countless times for road trips, weddings, bachelorette parties, and vacations, and I leave with unforgettable memories each time.

If you’re looking for Southern hospitality, stunning historic architecture, endless amazing restaurants and bars, a charming downtown filled with shopping, and beautiful beaches nearby, Charleston has everything you need for the perfect picturesque vacation.

2. Roanoke, Virginia

Roanoke is one of the South’s most underrated destinations. Growing up just an hour away, I spent countless nights and weekends exploring this charming town. What I love most about Roanoke are its breathtaking mountain views. In the heart of downtown, you can indulge in tasty food and delicious drinks while soaking in the stunning Blue Ridge Mountains. There’s nothing quite like it. 

While the mountains are the true showstoppers for me, I also appreciate that Roanoke remains a hidden gem, free from the tourists, crowds, and high prices you’d find in bigger Virginia cities like Charlottesville or Richmond. It’s the perfect stunning small-town escape with a big heart.

3. Asheville, North Carolina

I could rave about Asheville for days, and it all comes down to its incredible beer scene and fantastic mountain views. As the beer capital of North Carolina, Asheville boasts over 20 breweries just in the downtown area, making it a prime spot for brewery hopping.

But even if beer isn’t your thing, there’s so much more to love about Asheville. The town is renowned for its breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, making it an ideal base for mountain biking, hiking, and camping. It’s the perfect mountainous escape in the South!

4. Augusta, Georgia

I didn’t really get the hype about Augusta until recently. I’d heard it was famous for the Masters Golf Tournament, had a cool downtown, and was a bit fancy, but it wasn’t until I visited a few times this past year that I really fell for it.

While Augusta is a lot of fun during the Masters (I even went to the tournament this year!) It’s also a great getaway spot to take in the Southern ambiance. The downtown is full of shops and restaurants, and the locals are super friendly and proud of their city. And with its amazing golfing, it’s the perfect place for a group golf trip!

5. Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

Hilton Head Island is one of those places that instantly brings back a flood of memories for me. It was my family’s go-to vacation spot growing up, and we spent countless weeks at the beach here during my childhood. You might wonder what makes Hilton Head different from other beach towns, and I’ve got the answer.

What sets Hilton Head apart are its fantastic sidewalks. Most people get around the island by walking, jogging, or cycling, which is one of my favorite things about the area. Another unique aspect is the equestrian community; you’ll see plenty of horses around the island, and they’re such a joy to watch. And, of course, the amazing beaches paired with world-class golfing make it the perfect spot for a laid-back getaway with plenty of activities for the whole family. 

6. Nashville, Tennessee

You’ve probably heard of Nashville, the big city known for its honky tonk bars, celebrity singers, and maybe even its famous Nashville hot chicken. While you might feel like you know the city from rumors and photos, experiencing it firsthand is a whole different story.

Nashville isn’t just about great experiences and a lively atmosphere though; it’s also a beautiful place to visit. By day, the city is vibrant and colorful, and at night, the buildings and bars light up with neon signs, creating a truly special vibe.

7. Savannah, Georgia

I genuinely believe Savannah is the most beautiful place in Georgia. While the town is a blast with its endless bars, restaurants, and shopping, its stunning beauty really sets it apart for me. 

You’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the Savannah River and admire the city’s historic architecture. Be sure to stroll down Jones Street, where you’ll find charming old buildings and magnificent oak trees. You’ll want to snap a thousand pictures, but don’t forget to take a moment to just soak it all in.

8. New Orleans, Louisiana

If you’re anything like me, New Orleans immediately brings to mind Mardi Gras celebrations and lively parties. While those aspects are part of the city’s charm, New Orleans is also one of the most stunning places to visit in the South.

The city has a lively vibe with colorful murals downtown, and the Blue Ridge Mountains in the background add to its beauty.

You might be surprised to see Charleston, West Virginia, on this list, but it truly deserves a spot with its blend of city life and stunning mountain and river views. 

While you can enjoy shopping, dining, and nightlife in the city, you can also take in the scenic beauty of the Allegheny Mountains and the Elk and Kanawha Rivers. It offers the perfect combination of urban excitement and outdoor recreation, making it one of the most beautiful and fun cities in West Virginia.

I’m usually on the go with hiking, camping, skiing, and other outdoor activities, but every time I visit Emerald Isle, I’m drawn to its colorful homes and seaside charm. It’s the kind of place where you just want to sit by the water and take in the views for hours. It’s an ideal spot to take a break from the daily grind and appreciate quality time with family and friends by the coast.

15. Louisville, Kentucky

Louisville, Kentucky, is a city that never fails to surprise me. I’ve visited several times, mostly just passing through, but I’m always amazed by how beautiful and lively the city is. 

From the cityscape along the Ohio River with the impressive Big Four Bridge to the lush greenery and equestrian community beyond downtown, Louisville offers something for everyone to enjoy.
