The Christmas season brings a unique joy, and you can feel the holiday spirit all across the United States in December. As one of my favorite holidays, I love not only celebrating but also traveling to discover new festivities, lights, and displays.
Whether you’re looking for the ultimate snowy escape or a warm retreat full of Christmas magic, keep reading as I highlight some of the best destinations to make your holidays unforgettable.
1. Leavenworth, Washington
Leavenworth is a small town in central Washington. If you haven’t heard of it, picture a cozy place surrounded by massive mountains, with charming German-style buildings that make it feel like a Bavarian village. The hotels feel like they’re straight out of the German countryside, and the restaurants and shops look like something from a Christmas story.
With the various holiday lights, Christmas trees, and festive celebrations, it’s like experiencing a European Christmas without leaving the country.
2. Vail, Colorado
Vail is easily one of my favorite places to visit during the holiday season. There’s just something magical about a white Christmas, and Vail delivers that perfectly.
With its snowy atmosphere, top-notch ski resort, and charming Vail Village decked out in Christmas decorations and twinkling lights, it’s the ideal spot for a festive, snowy getaway.
3. New York City, New York
I’ve been to New York City more times than I can count, and every visit brings back the best memories. Whether it’s the food, the shopping, or the towering skyscrapers, something about the Big Apple always captivates me.
But my favorite time to visit is during the holiday season, from late November through the beginning of January. With the Rockefeller Christmas tree glowing, ice skating rinks scattered around town, and Macy’s decked out in festive decor, I could go on forever. It’s the perfect place for anybody wanting to experience the magic of Christmas right in the heart of it all.
4. Branson, Missouri
If you love Christmas trees, Branson is the place to be. While many cities in the U.S. are known for their grand trees and festive decorations, Branson stands out with its impressive collection of Christmas trees. We’re not talking about just a few; they showcase around 1,000 trees, including a towering eight-story tree.
The entire town comes alive with live performances, decorations, parades, shopping, and more. Branson is a must-visit for the ultimate Christmas experience in the heart of the Ozarks.
5. Chicago, Illinois
Chicago is famous for its deep-dish pizza, sports teams, skyscrapers, and music, but many don’t realize it’s also a fantastic Christmas destination. The city sparkles with holiday decorations and lights, with highlights like the lights at the Lincoln Park Zoo and the Chicago Botanic Gardens.
Beyond the lights, you’ll find plenty of Christmas markets, ice skating rinks, and more. If you’re looking for a city Christmas outside of New York, Chicago is a great choice, but remember to bundle up, as it gets especially cold during the holidays.
6. New Orleans, Louisiana
New Orleans is another fantastic destination for experiencing Christmas magic. Like many cities in the U.S., it’s known for its beautiful lights and decorations, but a standout event is the Christmas Eve Bonfires. Locals and visitors gather to light bonfires along the levees to guide Santa Claus to the city.
While this unique tradition is my favorite, there are plenty of other activities and celebrations, including ice skating, caroling, shopping, and more. It’s a vibrant place to visit during the holiday season for those looking to enjoy traditional Christmas qualities mixed with unique Cajun Country traditions.
7. St. Augustine, Florida
St. Augustine is the perfect choice if you’re looking to escape the chilly temperatures and want a warm destination with plenty of Christmas spirit. The city is beautiful and has countless Christmas lights during its Nights of Lights celebration, during which about 20 blocks in the historic district are adorned with white lights from the ground to the buildings and their rooftops. It’s a truly special experience.
While strolling through the area is delightful, visitors can also enjoy trolley tours, train tours, water tours, helicopter tours, carriage rides, and golf cart tours to see the lights. With the beautiful weather and breathtaking decorations, St. Augustine offers the perfect warm Christmas getaway.
8. Park City, Utah
Park City is one of North America’s largest ski resorts, making it a fantastic destination for skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts. But even if winter sports aren’t your thing, there’s plenty to enjoy during Christmas, from bars and restaurants to shopping and winter activities like snowmobiling.
The town also hosts special holiday events, including a tree-lighting ceremony, fireworks, a parade, and a sing-along. It’s the perfect spot for a mountain getaway filled with snow, activities, and a festive holiday ambiance.
9. North Pole, Alaska
If you don’t mind freezing temperatures and plenty of snow, North Pole, Alaska, is a fun spot to experience some true Christmas magic. Just 20 minutes from Fairbanks, it’s easy to get to and fully embraces the holiday spirit.
Visitors can stop by the Santa Claus House, see live reindeer, get letters officially signed by Santa, explore ice sculptures, do some holiday shopping, and more. To top it all off, winter is aurora season, so you might even catch a glimpse of the stunning northern lights while you’re there.
10. Charleston, South Carolina
I’ve visited Charleston, South Carolina, many times and during different seasons, but Christmas in Charleston is truly special. My sister-in-law got married there in December, and it was one of the most beautiful weddings I’ve ever seen!
The blend of southern hospitality, delicious food, stunning coastal views, colonial architecture, and great weather makes the experience even more memorable. Plus, the city lights up with festive decorations during the holidays. It’s an ideal choice for anyone looking for a beachy Christmas, with all the decor and cheer but without the snow and freezing temperatures.

Next on the list is the charming, rustic mountain town of Jackson Hole. It’s a cowboy’s dream, with lively bars, excellent restaurants serving unique dishes, and modern hotels that blend upscale comfort with rustic touches and Western charm.
Plus, it’s just minutes from the Tetons, offering incredible views of the snowy mountains. A winter getaway here provides plenty of activities, from skiing to snowmobiling and more. It’s the perfect destination for anyone looking to head out West for Christmas and soak up the cowboy atmosphere surrounded by snow and mountains.
12. Bethlehem, Pennsylvania
Bethlehem, located in eastern Pennsylvania, is often recognized as one of the top Christmas towns in America. Famous for its Christmas Huts along Main Street and its Christkindlmarkt, held on weekends throughout the season, it’s an ideal spot to shop for gifts or soak up the holiday spirit.
Beyond shopping, Bethlehem is rich in history. Visitors can explore the town’s festive lights and decorations through various tours of its historic buildings. To make the experience even better, the town offers plenty of seasonal events, like the Live Advent Calendar and horse-drawn carriage rides. It’s a great destination for anyone looking for a festive small-town Christmas experience.

I was born and raised in Virginia, and honestly, you never know what kind of weather you’ll get around Christmas. I’ve seen everything from nearly a foot of snow to sunny days in the high 60s. But one thing you can always count on, especially in Alexandria, is the festive spirit, which includes decorations, Christmas trees, holiday lights, and caroling.
Virginia really knows how to celebrate the season, and Alexandria’s Market Square is a must-see. With its old-town charm and Victorian buildings adorned with Christmas decor, it’s a sight you won’t want to miss.

The small town of Kennebunkport in southern Maine is the perfect place for a classic New England Christmas. Known for its annual Christmas Prelude, which lasts about two weeks, the town offers a variety of festive events.

15. Stowe, Vermont

There are also amazing spas in the area for those looking to relax and warm up from the chilly temperatures outdoors.
