6 U.S. Budget-Friendly Road Trips Better Than Luxury Vacations
It’s easy to think you must travel internationally to experience the best vacation. It’s common today to see social media highlights of exotic islands and luxurious excursions you can partake in internationally. Yet, in most cases, these international vacations come with a hefty price tag.
The missing link in these vacations is the priceless memories you can create with cheaper road trips here in the US. There’s something about the quality time, unique experiences, and the most random stops along the way with family or friends that are truly the best highlights from a vacation!
Here are some budget-friendly US road trips you can explore that are better than expensive international vacations.
1. Acadia National Park, Maine
This road trip to Maine is the vacation my family and I took a few short summers ago. It was a solid 12 days of adventure and fun, starting from Northern Virginia with stops on the way to our final destination, Lamoine, Maine.
Our stops included overnight stays in Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Portland, Maine. Lamoine is located on the outskirts of the Acadia National Park which was our primary place to visit once we reached the south-eastern tip of Maine.
When venturing around Acadia National Park, Maine you can experience Connecticut’s quiet beaches, pedal the rail explorer in Rhode Island, explore and find sea glass on Peak’s Island in Portland, and stop in York Beach.
You will encounter breathtaking views among trails of endless beauty, and if it’s your lucky day and you have a good eye, you can find sea glass and sand dollars at Sand Beach! The coastal waters are magical. You’ll find yourself mesmerized by the water dancing along the rocky ridges off the coast.
Lastly, don’t forget to visit Thunder Hole while in the national park. It’s a must-see! This was our most epic family vacation, and it didn’t break the bank! We’ve been to Mexico, the US Virgin Islands, Florida, and more. My kids still talk about our 2-week road trip to Maine!
2. Stowe, Vermont
The Northeast has some of the most beautiful budget-friendly road trips in the US. Stowe, Vermont is no different. This gorgeous state offers activities year-round.
We stayed at the Smuggler’s Notch Resort. My family and I had the best time visiting this area. There’s so much to do right there on the property.
Visit Stowe in the summer and enjoy miniature golf, zip-lining, llama trek guided tours, and swim in the basin nearby with water activities for your kids too! You will love the stunning falls nearby if your family is anything like mine, and loves waterfalls.

Notch’s Pass is another gorgeous stop to mark on your road trip. It offers hiking trails, boulders to climb, and caves to explore. My kids loved adventuring the lands!
During the Winter the Pass is closed due to heavy snow accumulation. Definitely check before you go.
Stowe is also one of the top 10 ski resorts in the US. If visiting in the winter, grab your skis and hit the slopes! You can’t go wrong visiting Stowe, Vermont. Whether you’re road-tripping to Stowe in the summer or winter, there’s something for everyone!
3. White Mountains, New Hampshire
This budget-friendly road trip is for adventurous souls who enjoy new experiences and creating epic memories. White Mountains is a gorgeous location with many small towns where you could easily spend a week with family or friends. During the warmer months, experience all the hiking your soul desires, boating excursions, golfing, scenic rail riders, and kayaking.
If you’re traveling here during winter, specifically January-March, you can partake in the most unique experience. Have you ever experienced the Ice Castles? The ice castles are in North Woodstock, New Hampshire. Imagine walking through an ice maze, sliding down an ice slide, crawling through tunnels, and exploring ice caverns.
It sounds refreshingly cold and fun! White Mountains is a bucket-list, affordable road trip for my family!
4. East Matunuck State Beach, Rhode Island
Another great road trip option for the outdoors-driven soul is East Matunuck State Beach in Rhode Island. If you love the beach and sunbathing, this place is for you. It’s the perfect road trip for the family or with a group of friends.
But that’s just your final destination! If you love chasing waterfalls, stay overnight in Benton, Pennsylvania, and visit Ricketts Glen State Park. Here you get to partake in 7.2 miles of the Falls Trail where you will experience approximately 24 different waterfalls with varying terrain and views that will take your breath away!
The next day find yourself on your way to New Jersey for a quick, but good hike, Mount Tammany. There is no cost to hike in Ricketts Glen State Park, PA, or Mount Tammany, NJ. We love a few good free activities when road-tripping!
Afterward, find your way to Connecticut’s coast to explore beaches in West Haven, and then head north towards the Bigelow Hollow State Park. The views in both locations are camera-worthy! Here, you get the best of both worlds -sunbathing and cooling off in the brisk New England waters and then hiking, kayaking, or having a picnic in one of the luscious forested and beautiful state parks. You’ll love it!
You can stay overnight in Connecticut for a day or two then reach your final destination, East Matunuck State Beach, Rhode Island, just a few hours from Connecticut’s coast. This could easily be several days to a week’s road trip at little cost.
5. Washington, DC – Northern Virginia Area
I’ve lived in the Northern Virginia area for more than half my life and honestly, while the cost of living is high, it is one of the better budget-friendly road trips you could take with your family.
DC offers visitors an abundance of free historical, science, and art-based museums! If you’re a history buff, you’ll love the historical monuments and landmarks throughout the city.
Stop into Georgetown and visit Georgetown Cupcakes. But be ready to wait in line. This cupcake shop has the best cupcakes and you’ll be waiting to get yours. But, they are tasty and worth the wait!
But exploring doesn’t have to stop in DC. With the proximity to well-known cities nearby, you’ll have the option to explore all they offer too.
Visit Old Town Alexandria, right outside of DC, it’s filled with shops and restaurants along cobblestone walkways. Grab some lunch and sit by the water for a relaxing view of the Potomac River.
Travel approximately an hour to Loudoun County and stop by one of the many wineries. Loudoun County didn’t earn the title “Napa Valley” of the East Coast for nothing. You will find a laundry list of activities both free and low-cost that you can partake in. I am always finding new things to do and explore in the vicinity. It never gets old!
6. The Pacific Coast Highway, California
Nothing is more beautiful than having the best scenic views throughout your road trip. The Pacific Coast Highway in California offers astounding and breathtaking views. You can begin this budget-friendly road trip in Leggett, Northern California, and head south ending in Orange County, California.
I rode along a portion of the Pacific Coast Highway several years back and to this day, I still remember the blue piercing coastal waters crashing against the cliffs as if it were yesterday.
Do you want to live out this road trip and get outdoors? Go camping! There are camping grounds available at different locations along the route so be sure to plan and get reservations ahead of time, as needed.
The destinations along the drive you will not want to miss consist of Humboldt Redwoods State Park, San Francisco, Half Moon Bay, Santa Cruz, Monterey and Carmel-by-the-Sea, Big Sur, Pismo Beach, Santa Barbara, and Montecito. The views you experience on this road trip will imprint your memories forever! This is a must-do inexpensive road trip for the entire family!
