Dennis Allen is the Least Successful Coach in the NFL, According to a new Study
A new study has revealed which current NFL head coaches are the most and least successful.
The study, conducted by CSGOLuck ranked the most and least successful head coaches of the 2023-2024 season based on various factors, including their win percentage, average division finish, and playoff games won.
To determine each head coach’s overall index score, each variable was awarded an index score from 0 to 10 based on raw data, with 0 being the worst and 10 being the best.
The Most Successful Coaches in the NFL
Bill Belichick
Bill Belichick is in first place, with an overall score of 80.26. Belichick has been a head coach for 29 years, more than any other coach in the league, and 480 games under his management earned him an index score of 10 for years served and games coached. Belichick scored 7.91 for his winning percentage for the New England Patriots due to his 65% success rate.
Andy Reid
Andy Reid is the NFL’s second most successful head coach, with an overall score of 57.48. He has the second longest service as a head coach, at 25 years, achieving an index score of 9.56 in years of action. With 396 games coached in his career, he received an impressive score of 9.7 for games coached for the Kansas City Chiefs.
Sean McVay
Sean McVay ranks as the third most successful NFL head coach, with an overall score of 54.36. McVay has displayed he’s an eager winner with an average playoff win percentage of 70%, equating to 9.8 as an index score, the third highest in the NFL. He is also one of the only managers to win a Super Bowl.
Kyle Shanahan
The NFL’s fourth most successful head coach is Kyle Shanahan, scoring 49.86 overall. Shanahan has coached 108 games in his time with the 49ers and has even won a conference championship as head coach in his relatively short 7 years active in the industry. Out of 9 playoff games coached, the San Francisco 49ers managed to win 6, resulting in a respectful index score of 9.34 for win percentage in the playoffs.
Least Successful NFL Coaches
Dennis Allen
Dennis Allen takes the top spot as the least successful head coach in the NFL, with an overall score of 18.28. Allen has just 5 years’ experience as a head coach, has achieved no participation in the playoffs, no Superbowl wins, and no conference championships. He received an index score of 0 for all these variables and an overall win percentage of 32%.
Mike McDaniel
The second least successful head coach in the NFL is Mike McDaniel, with an overall score of 18.62. Although he achieved no playoff wins, McDaniel is one of the only coaches in the bottom five to coach a single playoff game, giving him an index score of 0.23.
However, with just 2 years as their head coach, the Miami Dolphins have a solid overall win percentage of 59%, resulting in an index score of 6.43, which is impressive considering his low overall ranking.
Johnathan Gannon
Jonathan Gannon of the Arizona Cardinals is the third least successful head coach, with an overall score of 20 out of 100. Gannon achieved the lowest score of 0 for most variables including any participation or wins in the playoffs. He also places joint last in the average division finish variable, scoring 4 out of 4 in the Cardinals division, putting them at the bottom of their league division. Gannon only has 1 year of experience, and the lack of time spent as a head coach could be a result of his lower rankings.
Matt Eberflus
The fourth least successful NFL head coach is Matt Eberflus, who has an overall score of 20.64. Eberflus has a score of 2.58 for years active, with just 2 years of experience. He has also had little success in other areas with playoffs, the Superbowl, and conference championships all scoring 0.
Todd Bowles
Todd Bowles takes fifth place as the least successful head coach, with an overall score of 20.84. The leader of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers has managed to make one appearance at the playoffs with a score of 0.23 for games coached, however, didn’t manage to get the win and acquired a score of 0 for playoff wins. Bowles is yet to win a Superbowl or conference championship, both currently with a score of 0.

The following data was gathered for every NFL head coach in the 2023-2024 season;
- Total years active
- Games coached
- Win percentage
- Number of years in playoffs
- Playoff games coached
- Playoff games won
- Playoff game win percentage
- Average division finish
- Number of Superbowl wins
- Number of conference championships.
Each variable is ranked relative to the variable’s range in other states, such that a score of zero represents the worst among the variables, and a score of 10 represents the best. The scaled indicators were then indexed using the weightings above the table to achieve the final index scores and overall rank for each head coach.
