I agree Elway was incredible. I thought of Marino too, but couldn’t decide who to bump to put him in. I am admittedly biased toward Montana as growing up we used to go to 49ers training camps every year and I loved watching him play.
I think you did a pretty good job. I want to focus on quarterback. I want to distinguish the difference between ‘greatest’ and ‘best’. I think Tom Brady is clearly the ‘best’ quarterback of all time, that is, the most accomplished or most successful. No one can compete with his records and Super Bowl achievements. However, I also think he was very much a product of Bill Belichick’s coaching ability–who I think is probably the greatest coach of all time. To me, John Elway is the ‘greatest’ quarterback of all time. No one could physically do what he could do on the field. Pardon the pun, but there’s ‘No Way’ Brady, or Joe Montana or Peyton Manning could do what Elway could do–Elway was simply the greatest overall athlete to ever play that position. He was also such a target from the beginning–everyone knew he was the great talent at the position. Brady, Montana, Manning, those guys were not superior athletes and were not targeted like Elway. So again, I have no argument about Brady being the ‘best.’ But I do think Elway was the ‘greatest’. I also think Dan Marino deserves to be mentioned somewhere–what an incredible quarterback. And I’m taking nothing away from Montana or Manning–those two were just fantastically skilled. But to me, the greatest: John Elway.
