10 Pet Friendly Cities in the US

As an adventure-driven soul with a love for hiking and a pet-parent to North, my German Shepherd, I desire to know where I can travel with my favorite sidekick.

Numerous studies and statistics are tying back to the top pet-friendly cities in the US which appear to change yearly.

In one instance, WalletHub’s statistics considered environmental temperatures, veterinary care, cost, number of available dog parks, rental properties and businesses allowing pets, and the walkability in these locations. I find these statistics to be useful if you’re looking to relocate.

I interviewed and gained insight from other adventure and travel bloggers who are pet owners. For my dog, North, and I, sidewalks aren’t a thing if we aren’t at home. We like to hike, climb rocks, explore unique places, and swim in lakes. I am looking for cities that welcome pets in the US that fit the adventurous travel-bound pet owners and their furry 4-legged friends.

These locations include dining options, locations for overnight stays, and the best climate. As a long-haired German Shepherd, the reality is, that the hotter it is, the more miserable North will be.

Take a look here. You may already live in one of these pet-friendly cities in the US. If not, maybe you’re willing to visit and explore or relocate!

It’s no surprise Flagstaff, Arizona makes the list for one of the pet-friendly cities in the US. Imagine a cooler climate, mountains around you, and mild summer days averaging in the 80’s.

The spring and fall temps are perfectly curated for you and your furry comrade to get outside and explore all Arizona offers. Flagstaff has plenty dining options such as Diablo Burger, The Toasted Owl, and Dark Sky Brewing Co.

The city welcomes pets with over 50 locations for overnight stays and countless trails to explore together! Be sure to stop at the Flagstaff Visitor Center where they’ll be greeted with a special gift.

Astoria, Oregon

Tucked away in the northwestern corner of Oregon lies Astoria. This is the place for you if you’re looking for a smaller city without all the hustle. This city opens doors so you can explore nearby beaches and historical monuments with your 4-legged friend.

The town offers your pet unique experiences you may not find anywhere else. Buckle (leash) up because they’ll get to ride along the Astoria Riverfront Trolley with you to learn about the city’s history with stops along the way noting well-known movies filmed in Astoria.

Think Goonies and Kindergarten Cop! You can also stroll along the Riverwalk, and take in the views of the Columbia River. This was one of my favorite things when visiting Astoria, soaking in those views! I loved the small-town feel and exploring this city. Make sure to add this to your drive along the Oregon coast!

Seattle, Washington

While the city is known for its rainy seasons, it also provides a climate that reaches, on average, the warmest in the high 70s. This sounds perfect for North and me! Not only does Seattle produce a temperate climate, but your pet is welcomed at almost every corner you turn. Seattle has it all! From cafes, restaurants, breweries, dog parks that serve beer, shopping centers, and endless trails with gorgeous views. Pack your bags, North, we are moving!

Denver has a moderate climate year-round like Flagstaff, AZ making this, yet another, pet-friendly city your fluffy explorer will love. Although Denver is busier, it does not dismiss the love for pets. Between Yappy Hour on the Plaza to Woof-o-Ween Pet Pawrade to Barktoberfest, there’s something for every furry 4-legged friend!

The city offers pet owners outdoor activities in abundance. With the mountains in the nearby distance, you’re guaranteed to enjoy a hike or two and endless breathtaking views too!

This midwestern city is where your pet will be spoiled with all the treats they could indulge in. Madison welcomes you and your pet for a cup of joe at the local cafes.

Many of the food establishments in Madison offer outdoor patio dining so you can share a table (and maybe your meal) with your pet. Feel free to stop at one of the many breweries or cider houses where you can grab a beverage while your furry companion enjoys a pup cup.

Austin, Texas

In Austin, your furry 4-legged friend can experience every adventure right by your side. Feel at ease knowing your buddy is welcomed in most places in the city from local bars and restaurants to off-leash dog parks.

Austin offers some of the most interactive locations where you and your pet can play and socialize all in the same place, such as Bouldin Acres or Yard Bar. Stop by a local farmers market, hike, swim in Barton Creek Greenbelt, or go shopping together at The Domain. This city provides all the entertainment for you and your pet!

This isn’t just the city home to country music; Nashville is the city that boasts pet-friendly places to stay and dine including activities and pet events. Sign your furry sidekick up for the Pups and Pints HOWL-oween or the Annual Pup Parade of Nashville Oktoberfest.

The list goes on! Are you interested in history? Look no further! Your pet is welcome to walk along your side visiting historical monuments in Centennial Park, a huge attraction for many visitors.

In the east-south-central region of the US, Lexington, Kentucky offers an overall mild climate averaging highs in the 80’s. The city provides pet owners with a variety of activities to choose from.

Whether it’s socializing with friends at a local brewery or winery, stopping by a cafe or bakery, or letting your furry friend run the yard at one of the dog parks, the options are endless for both of you. Do you love to shop? Lexington allows pet owners to shop with their pets. Check out some outdoor shopping at The Summit at Fritz Farm.

Bar Harbor, Maine

Maine is rated as one of the top pet-friendly states in the US. Therefore, it’s no surprise that Bar Harbor also makes the list. Acadia National Park is located right outside the Bar Harbor city limits and is one of the few national parks in the US that allows pets.

Do you enjoy exploring on the water? What about your favorite sidekick? Bar Harbor offers Acadian Nature Cruises where you both can ride the waves!

You can also take a pet-friendly shuttle from Bar Harbor into Acadia National Park and sightsee at the Jordan Pond. The mirrored views of this pond are beyond words. Be sure to grab a photo of you and your 4-legged explorer with the Jordan Pond as your backdrop!

Washington, District of Columbia

Washington, D.C., home of the Washington Nationals offers locals and tourists a unique experience for you and your pup, Pups in the Park. It’s an event where the two of you get to enjoy a baseball game together! In Washington, you’ll see man’s best friend everywhere you turn.

They can be seen walking with their human counterparts along the city sidewalks. Is your pet thirsty? Many Washington establishments provide fresh bowls of water outside for your pet. Another great place to take your furry adventurer is the National Mall.

This beautifully landscaped area sits in the center of the Smithsonian Museums. Here in Washington, D.C. you’ll find people and pets picnicking, walking, or taking in the views.

Which city will you venture to first with your furry 4-legged explorer?
