WildLanterns at Woodland Park Zoo: A Magical Holiday Experience
The holidays are officially here, and one of my favorite traditions is lighting up Seattle nights once again! WildLanterns at Woodland Park Zoo is back, and trust me—it’s bigger, brighter, and more enchanting than ever.
This annual event transforms the zoo into a glowing winter wonderland, offering a delightful escape from the dreary Pacific Northwest weather.
It’s an event I eagerly anticipate every year, even making the 2.5-hour trek (sometimes twice!) to bask in its magic.
What is WildLanterns?
If you’re new to WildLanterns, let me paint the scene. Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle undergoes a breathtaking transformation after dark, becoming an immersive holiday spectacle of light, color, and sound. Each year features a fresh theme, so there’s always something new to look forward to, making it a must-see no matter how many times you’ve visited.
The experience? Imagine walking through the zoo surrounded by lantern displays in the shapes of animals, plants, and nature scenes—all brought to life with vibrant hues, gentle movements, and whimsical sounds.
My personal favorites this year? A peacock that fans its stunning feathers every few minutes, a massive glowing snake, and, as always, the ethereal butterflies that never fail to captivate me.
For the kids (and the young at heart), interactive exhibits add an extra layer of fun. This year’s highlights included a towering cactus that echoes your voice, a drumming tree that “dances” along with your beats, and a few surprises I won’t spoil here.
What Else to Do at WildLanterns
Beyond the lantern displays, there’s plenty to do to round out your evening. Ride the carousel, indulge in some cozy hot cocoa, and pick up holiday gifts at the zoo store.
For the grown-ups, the Frosted Glass lounge offers a cozy fireside setting to sip festive cocktails, while a private snow globe rental—complete with charcuterie and beverages—brings a touch of luxury to the night.

Night Owls (21+ Only)
Dates: December 5, 2024, & January 2, 2025
This brand-new adults-only event is a fabulous addition to WildLanterns! Picture sipping holiday cocktails, enjoying gourmet bites, and mingling in themed lounges surrounded by enchanting lanterns. Select an entry time before 6:00 p.m. to meet animal ambassadors (they’ll call it a night early), then stay for games, live music, and an unforgettable festive vibe.

Holiday Senior Stroll
Dates: November 19 & December 3, 2024, 4:00–9:00 p.m.

A warm and welcoming tradition, Holiday Senior Stroll invites seniors and their families to experience WildLanterns at a leisurely pace. Stroll through the glowing displays, soak in the festive atmosphere, and share the wonder with loved ones of all ages.
Low-Sensory Nights
Dates: December 11, 2024, & January 9, 2025
These specially designated evenings provide a quieter, more comfortable experience for visitors of all abilities. WildLanterns transforms into an inclusive holiday haven with dimmed lights and softened sounds. Families can also visit Zoomazium Nightlights, a serene space featuring themed activities like neon coloring and interactive play led by instructors.
Nightly Performances
Don’t miss the live Chinese art performances, a highlight of this year’s WildLanterns season. Hosted in the PACCAR Auditorium, these nightly shows include traditional Lion Dances, Face Changing, Umbrella Juggling, Chair Balancing, and more. It’s a captivating blend of culture and artistry that adds even more magic to your visit.
