For one, the crowds are much smaller than during other times of the year. I don’t know about you, but I’m happy anytime I can be in nature with less human interaction!

What is the weather like at Zion in winter?

Let’s answer the biggest question I get regarding visiting Zion in the Winter, “Is there going to be snow?”

It’s a valid question. I grew up in California, and I love warm winters, so I always like to know what I’m getting into when we plan winter travel!

The answer is that it really varies. You could get lucky and have sunny skies and warmer temps in the 50s or you could experience a winter wonderland with bits of snow!

On average, winter temperatures in Zion are as follows:

Zion Canyon experiences approximately half of its annual precipitation between December and March, as stated by the NPS. But don’t let that scare you away. This region doesn’t get much precipitation, so even if it does rain, it shouldn’t last too long.

Does it Snow in Zion in November?

Not really. The average amount of snow for the Month of November is half an inch.

Does it Snow in Zion in December?

December is considered one of the snowiest months in Zion National Park. Even though it is one of the most frigid months in Zion, the average snowfall is only about one inch.

While snow in Zion in January is obviously possible, the average snowfall is less than one inch traditionally.

Along with December, February is one of the snowiest months in Zion National Park. You can expect about 1 inch of snow to fall during February.

Snowfall starts to dwindle away in March. You may see just over half an inch during the early portions of March.

Things to do in Zion in the Winter

Zion National Park is a beautiful place to visit any time of year, but the winter months offer a unique experience that is worth checking out.

Some of the activities that are available to visitors include taking a hike, going cross-country skiing, enjoying a scenic drive, looking for wildlife, and taking incredible photos.

1. Take a Hike

One of the best ways to enjoy Zion in the winter is by taking a hike. There are a number of great trails to choose from, including the Observation Point Trail, Cable Mountain Trail, Riverside Walk Trail, Chinle Trail, and Sand Bench Trail.

Emerald Pools Trail is another trail you can do in the winter, but only partially. Be aware of icy conditions and avoid Middle and Upper Pools during winter.

If you’re looking to reach one of the most gorgeous views in Utah, hike, cross-country ski, or snowshoe across Zion Ponderosa’s forested plateau. The East Rim Trail in Zion National Park can be icy at times so this is a great alternative!

Before you go, be sure to check the ski conditions and always follow the posted signs. Remember to stay on established trails and be aware of other skiers, hikers, and wildlife.

3. Enjoy a scenic drive

If you’re looking for a more relaxed activity, you can enjoy a scenic drive through Zion National Park. There are several scenic drives to choose from, including the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive, Zion-Mt Carmel Tunnel, and Kolob Canyon Scenic Drive. This is a great way to see all that the park has to offer.

4. Look for Wildlife

If you are lucky enough to be at Zion when there is a light dusting of snow, be sure to take advantage of it and snap some pictures. The contrast between the snow and red rocks is stunning.

Benefits of going to Zion in the winter

Zion National Park is a breathtaking sight to behold in the winter.

The park is much less crowded than in the summer, so you can really enjoy the solitude and beauty of nature.

You can also drive your own car instead of relying on the shuttle, which makes it much more convenient.

The park is also home to active wildlife, so you’re likely to see deer, eagles, and other animals while you’re there.

There are a few different lodging options available near Zion National Park in the winter.

The Zion Lodge is the only in-park lodging, and it’s open year-round.

Camping

Watchman Campground – Tent and electric campsites are available year-round and group campsites are available from March through November. All sites include a place for a tent or RV, a picnic table, and access to a fire ring.

All campsites in Watchman Campground require reservations year-round. Reservations may be made six (6) months in advance.

Tips for visiting Zion in Winter

Can you do Zion Narrows in winter?

The Narrows is one of the most popular trails in Zion, and for good reason. It is an amazing experience wading through the freezing cold water with towering walls on either side of you.

That being said, it is only recommended for experienced hikers as it can be quite dangerous. Make sure to check conditions before attempting the hike, and always hike with a partner.

If you hike the Narrows in the Winter, you will need to be dressed properly. Do not underestimate the cold and wet conditions.

Whereas in the summer, you can use water hiking shoes, during the winter you will want to be sure they are completely waterproof.

You will need neoprene socks, waterproof boots, and Gore-Tex pants at a minimum. You can rent gear near the park at Zion Outfitters. You can make a reservation online, or go into the store.
