20 Things in Your Modern Life That Were Actually Invented by Ancient Romans

On a recent trip to Turkey, I had the opportunity to explore Ephesus. Ephesus is an ancient city located in what is now modern-day Turkey, near the town of Selçuk. It is renowned for its rich history and magnificent ruins, among the best-preserved in the Mediterranean.

Founded in the 10th century BCE, Ephesus was a major port city and cultural hub during Greek and Roman times. It played a significant role in the spread of early Christianity and was one of the seven churches of Asia cited in the Book of Revelation.

As I strolled through, I was amazed at how advanced the city was! People had hot water in their homes (the rich did), plumbing that removed waste from the city, and many other things that I recognized as things we still use today.

I researched to see how much of our “modern” ideas stem from the Roman Empire.

1. Urban Planning and Infrastructure

The Romans pioneered organized urban spaces with meticulously planned roads, forums, and residential areas.

Their innovation in constructing extensive road networks and sewage systems laid the groundwork for modern city planning and infrastructure. Today, grid layouts and centralized urban planning principles can be traced back to Roman cities.

2. Hydraulic Engineering

Roman aqueducts and plumbing systems revolutionized water distribution and use, providing hot and cold water to public baths and private homes.

Modern hydraulic engineering emphasizes ensuring reliable water supply and sanitation, which owes much to Roman methodologies, demonstrating their lasting influence on public utilities and facilities.

3. Architectural Innovations

Romans introduced concrete, arches, vaults, and domes, allowing for sturdier and more majestic buildings to be constructed.

These architectural elements are still foundational in modern architecture, enabling the construction of large-scale public buildings and skyscrapers, showcasing the enduring legacy of Roman engineering.

4. Military Tactics and Organization

The Roman military’s structured and disciplined approach, with its legions, centurions, and tactical formations, has influenced modern military organization and strategy.

Concepts such as hierarchical command structures and strategic troop deployments in battle continue to be integral to contemporary military practices.

5. Legal System and Governance

Roman law laid the foundations for the legal systems in many modern Western countries. Principles such as the rights of the accused, legal representation, and the compilation of law codes are directly derived from Roman legal practices, influencing the rule of law and governance in the modern world.

6. Road Construction

The Romans built an extensive network of roads, many of which formed the backbone of modern transportation routes in Europe.

Modern highway systems utilize the construction techniques and the concept of linking a vast empire through roads, facilitating trade and communication.

7. Medicine and Public Health

Romans emphasized public health with baths and complex sewage systems designed to prevent disease by managing waste and promoting hygiene.

Modern public health systems, focusing on sanitation and preventive healthcare, echo these Roman concerns and solutions.

When visiting Ephesys, we could see “street signs” pointing toward the pharmacy and hospital, marked with symbols you still see used today to represent the same professions.

8. Cultural Contributions

The literary, philosophical, and artistic achievements of the Roman Empire have profoundly influenced Western culture.

The works of Roman poets, philosophers, and playwrights have shaped modern literature and thought, while Roman ideals of beauty and art continue to influence contemporary art and culture.

Romans popularized public entertainment through games, amphitheaters, and public baths. Modern sports stadiums, theatrical performances, and public leisure facilities can trace their origins to these Roman innovations, reflecting the empire’s lasting influence on how societies entertain and recreate.

The Roman governments used gladiators and festivals to draw the citizens in and keep them occupied with violent entertainment, food, and drink. Meanwhile, the politicians could meet and pass laws that affected the masses. Sound familiar?

11. Monetary System

The widespread use of coinage in Rome, with standardized denominations, was a significant development in economic history.

Modern monetary systems, with central banks issuing standardized currency, reflect these Roman practices, facilitating trade and economic stability.

The structured Roman education system emphasized rhetoric and logic and influenced modern educational frameworks.

The focus on liberal arts and sciences in today’s schools mirrors Roman educational practices, preparing individuals for public life and civic duty.

16. Food Preservation and Culinary Influence

Romans developed methods to store and preserve food, influencing Western culinary traditions.

Techniques such as curing meats and fermenting wine were essential for long-term storage and are still used in modern culinary practices.

Many modern legal terms are borrowed directly from Latin, reflecting the deep influence of Roman law and administration. This legacy is evident in the pervasive use of Latin terms in legal contexts today, underpinning the language of law and governance.

19. Sports and Olympics

While the Olympics originated in Greece, the Romans adopted these games and introduced their variations, such as chariot racing and gladiatorial contests. Modern sports spectacles, focusing on grandeur and mass entertainment, are reminiscent of Roman public games.
