1. Chacchoben
If you’re looking for a unique experience, head to the nearby Chacchoben Ruins. These impressive ruins are just a short drive away from the cruise port and will let you explore some of the ancient temples and artifacts that were left behind by the Mayans hundreds of years ago.
Chacchoben Ruins are about 50-minute drive from the cruise port, so it’s best to take a tour.
This is one of the most popular tours of Chacchoben. It includes air-conditioned transportation to the ruins and a guide to point out all of the highlights and has a “back to the ship” guarantee.
2. Kohunlich Ruins
Kohunlich Ruins are some of the oldest Mayan ruins in Costa Maya and make for an interesting day trip. This archaeological site features various plazas and structures, as well as large masks carved into stone.
You can also find hieroglyphs throughout the area that tell a story about this ancient culture. Kohunlich is about two hours from the cruise port, so it’s best to take a tour.

5. Maya Chan Beach
Book a day at Maya Chan and you won’t regret it – despite being the farthest beach away from the Costa Maya cruise port, this beach’s top-rated option provides plenty of activities to make up for it.
You have to book a reservation at Maya Chan similar to a shore excursion and they will reserve a cabana for you.
The Maya Chan team will collect you at the port and take you back when it’s time to depart, a journey of approximately 20 minutes.
Relax and soak up the sun in your own private cabana, complete with two comfortable chairs, a bed, and even a hammock. Plus – they will deliver delicious food and drinks right to you! (Chips, salsa, Guacamole, Rum punch).
Indulge in an impressive taco buffet for lunch, and enjoy a selection of specialty drinks from the bar all day long!
The beach’s staff works diligently to ensure that the seagrass is cleared from the shoreline, thus allowing you to take full advantage of the beach. If you prefer, you can hang out in their freshwater pool.
They also have kayaks, snorkel gear, and floating beach mats for use and will deliver you drinks by kayak while you are in the water.
6. YaYa Beach
YaYa Beach is a great spot if you want to get away from it all. The secluded beach is located in the Punta Laguna Nature Reserve, and there are no crowds here.
You can enjoy snorkeling, kayaking, swimming, or just relaxing under one of the many palapas on the shoreline. It’s a great spot to enjoy the Caribbean sunshine and nature!
Just a 10-minute ride away from the cruise port, Yaya beach is readily accessible via taxi or shuttle for around $4 per person to and from Costa Maya.
