Grand Cayman Beaches for Cruise Passengers- Rum Point

The Best Stingray City Tours from Grand Cayman

Grand Cayman is a Caribbean island located in the western Caribbean Sea, south of Cuba and northwest of Jamaica.

It is the largest of the three Cayman Islands and is a British Overseas Territory. Grand Cayman is known for its white sand beaches, luxury resorts, and unique attractions such as Stingray City, where visitors can get up close and personal with stingrays.

Stingray City is one of the most popular Grand Cayman Cruise Port Tours when your Caribbean cruise stops in George town.

If you’re looking for a fun and thrilling day out in Grand Cayman, the best way to experience Stingray City is through one of the many tour companies offering tours from Grand Cayman.

These tours usually run for 2-3 hours, allowing visitors plenty of time to interact with these amazing creatures.

Most tours include the use of snorkel gear and a boat ride to the site, plus you’ll get an experienced guide who will teach you about stingrays and their ecosystem.

Stingray City Tour

What is Stingray City?

Stingray City is a natural offshore sandbar located 25 miles off the coast of Grand Cayman. It’s an area where hundreds of free-roaming southern stingrays congregate, making it a popular spot for snorkeling and swimming.

It’s an interesting place, not only because of the Stingrays, but because you are so far from land, that you can’t see it, yet the sandbar is a very shallow area, you are only in about 3 feet of water.

The soft white powder sand and crystal clear Caribbean water are incredibly beautiful here.

The Stingrays congregate here as a learned behavior from generations past. Mosquitos used to be very bad on the island of Grand Cayman, and fishermen would be swarmed with mosquitos when trying to clean their daily catch.

Fishermen began to stop offshore on the sandbar to clean their fish without being bothered by mosquitos. They would toss the unusable pieces of fish into the water surrounding the sandbar.

The Stingrays became accustomed to finding food in this area, and have made it their home ever since.

When visiting Stingray City, visitors can expect to find large populations of Southern stingrays that congregate in shallow waters near sandbars.

Here, you’ll be able to touch them and feed them squid. While it can be a bit intimidating for first-timers, a qualified guide will make sure that everyone is safe and comfortable around these wonderful creatures.

Best Stingray City Tours in Grand Cayman

What is the best way to get to Stingray City?

If you don’t have your own boat or jet ski, you will need to take a guided tour to visit Stingray City.

Can you See Stingray City on a Cruise?

Yes! In fact, visiting Stingray City is one of the most popular cruise excursions in Grand Cayman. When you visit Grand Cayman, you will arrive at Georgetown. From Georgetown, you can join your tour, and then head out to Stingray City.

The boat ride is about 25 -30 minutes. We experienced very calm seas while riding out there, but you may want to take a motion sickness medicine if you are prone to seasickness.

What are the best Stingray City Tours?

There is no shortage of excursions that will take you to Stingray City while visiting Grand Cayman. Each cruise line will offer its own excursions, however, I strongly suggest that you book through a local tour company for this excursion.

Not only will you most likely find a cheaper tour with fewer people, but you can also help support the local economy this way.

** Tip: A lot of people are worried about booking an excursion through a company other than the cruise line. The argument is that “the ship will leave you if you aren’t on an official cruise line excursion, and you happen to be running late”. This is true, HOWEVER, the local tour operators rely on tourism for their livelihood. If they had passengers miss the ship, their reputation would be ruined, and they would be out of business. These companies are very careful to get ensure everyone is safely back onboard.

Private Stingray City Excursion Options

We took advantage of a private excursion to Stingray City and it was the best decision.

It was incredible to have the entire boat to ourselves, a local guide, and a personalized itinerary. We could stay as long as we wanted in each location, which was great. It was truly a wonderful experience.

When we were at Stingray City and saw the overcrowded cruise ship excursions we were so happy to have been on our own.

In addition to the stingray city tour, starfish beach, and coral reefs for snorkeling, we also ate lunch at rum point and went tubing behind the boat. So much fun!

While the tour that we did isn’t available any longer, these are the highest-rated private tours to Stingray City.
