When we decided to go to Roatan I knew I HAD to hold a sloth! After a ton of research, I came across Daniel Johnsons Monkey and Sloth Hangout.
Bonus! I found out we could hold sloths AND monkeys in Roatan!
There are also zoos and other areas to see wildlife but I loved the intimate setting of Daniel’s, and how you could feel how much he actually cares about the animals and the community.
I love supporting small businesses when we travel!
I would never visit a place that I felt didnt put the animals first. I did a lot of research before we booked.
I messaged Daniel on Facebook and he was great and responding and answering questions. He had many different options for how we could spend our day.
We talked back and forth trying to maximize our time on the island and appeal to both teenagers and adults.

He came up with a great package. We decided on:
- Transportation from the port to the sanctuary
- Time at the sanctuary where we could hold a sloth, monkeys, and birds (admission included)
- Roatan, island tour
- Zipline (paid separately)
- Beach time
- Transport back to the port with time left for shopping.
Honestly, it was so affordable and easy. I couldn’t have been happier with the day.

In my post on Roatan I talked about how when you arrive in Mahogany Bay on a cruise, private vendors aren’t allowed to pick you up from the port area.
No biggie, but definitely something to know so that you are prepared to walk a bit.
Daniel was great about giving us directions.
So, for this tour, we were instructed to walk through the shopping area and down the hill, past the gates, and look for a sign that said “Daniel Johnson“.
The walk wasn’t long, and it wasn’t hard to find, but we were SWEATY when we got there. It was incredibly humid!
Luckily, we found our guide Karen, and she had an air-conditioned van!
There are many local vendors down here so even if you forgot to book an excursion I bet you could negotiate a good deal with one of the operators down there. This island runs on tourism and these people want to earn your business.

It is almost time to HOLD A SLOTH!
Karen is a gem. When I move to Roatan, (a definite plan) I will look her up and have her be my honorary mom. She’s delightful and knowledgeable and loves her home.
She took us to Daniel’s place first. OH EM GEE… SLOTH TIME!!! Seriously I might have squealed, and then cried a little. We had a guide that worked there to show us all the animals and help us hold the sloth.
Everyone got a turn with her. There were other sloths just lounging (do sloths lounge?) in the trees around us.
After we held the sloth he let us wander around (it’s a backyard so not huge) and see other animals he had there.

After we held a sloth, we played with Monkeys!
After the sloth, I could have just gone home, but there was more! They have MONKEYS!!, mischievous little monkeys named after Jersey Shore characters that you can play with!
We went into their cage and let them jump on us, snuggle with us, and play with us.
Be sure to leave your glasses and keys outside, they will totally steal them! One of the monkeys grabbed at my camera and I caught a selfie of him on there!
The monkeys were SO FREAKING FUN! We were able to stay there as long as we wanted.
It is a unique place because the monkeys have a cage, but the top is open, and they are running all over.
I loved it because they weren’t confined and unhappy.
They also have a spider monkey that I’m told goes on walks to town with Daniel. When we held the camera to him, he would “smile”.

Along with the monkeys and sloths, there were also parrots and macaws, island “rabbits” and a raccoon-type animal native to the area.
All in all, this visit was incredible. It was entertaining, educational, and affordable!

Are there Monkeys in Roatan, Honduras?
There are monkeys in Roatan, however, they are not indigenous to the island. Monkeys are indigenous to Honduras, but not Roatan. The Roatan monkeys that you see, were originally brought to Roatan were brought as pets, and then surrendered or abandoned.
Are sloths indigenous to Roatan?
No, sloths are not native to Roatan. Sloths in Roatan were brought over from the mainland of Honduras as pets and then were abandoned. You can see sloths in sanctuaries in Roatan.
What kind of animals are in Roatan Honduras?
Black Iguanas, over 120 species of birds, four bat species, Guatusas or “Island Rabbits” (agoutis), rats, wild pigs, opossums, and white-tailed deer call Roatan home. Crocodiles, frogs, lizards, and Coral Snakes (venomous) are also found in Roatan. In the water, you can find whale sharks, sea turtles, lobsters, conch, and bottlenose dolphins.
Where can I hold a sloth in Roatan Honduras?

Can I touch a sloth?
Yes, and no. The sanctuaries on Roatan give you the opportunity to touch a sloth in a safe and controlled way. This keeps both you and the sloth safe. You should never approach wildlife, no matter how docile they seem, if you see them in the wild.
Are Sloths Monkeys?
While sloths and monkeys are both mammals, they are not the same. Monkeys are primates. Sloths are Xenarthrans, and closely related to armadillos and anteaters.

Visiting Daniel Johnsons Monkey and Sloth Hangout is my absolute favorite excursion in Mahogony Bay. This is the best place to see sloths, they are loved and well taken care of, and not confined to cages.
