Travelers are Speaking out: These are the Most Overrated Tourist Destinations

Have you ever seen a beautiful place all over your Instagram feed, and then started dreaming about visiting? You save your money, cash in your PTO, and book the flight, but once you get there… you look around and are completely disappointed.

Maybe all of the photos were altered. Maybe it’s dirty, or the locals are rude, or it’s crazy expensive. Maybe it’s just not your vibe. But for whatever reason, you feel bummed out that this place was way too overhyped and didn’t live up to its reputation.

In a recent poll on social media, travelers were asked “What is the most overrated, or overhyped place you’ve ever been”, we’ve got the answers:

London, UK

London came in as the number one, most overrated city in the poll. Travelers state it is overpriced, traffic is a nightmare, and the food is not good.

Paris, France, USA

Paris came in number 2 as the most overrated tourist destination, although quite a few people were defending the city of lights. It seems Paris has either a love or hate effect on travelers.

The non-Paris lovers state it’s dirty, overrun with rats, and bugs, and the locals aren’t friendly to tourists. The defenders of the city declare that it is romantic and classic, and one of the best cities to visit.

Disney World/ Disneyland

You saw this coming, right? Oh, Disney, what have you done, and where is the magic? Disney has become extremely expensive making it nearly impossible for most families to vacation there. It also has become a hassle with all of the reservations, apps, and planning it takes, you can’t just show up and enjoy anymore, and even die-hard Disney fans have just about had enough.

Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

Ah, Sin City. You either love it, or you hate it. The biggest complaints travelers have are the adult activities being solicited on every corner, along with alcohol and drug use. People state it all feels “manufactured and fake” and they tire of the constant noise. Food is said to be overpriced and not high quality.

Interestingly enough, these tend to be the same reasons that some travelers love the glitz and glam of Las Vegas.

Oia, Santorini Greece

This one I agree with 100%. Oia Santorini is beautiful and I was excited to visit, however, like other travelers I found it to be overcrowded, over-commercialized, and extremely expensive. There are plenty of other Greek Islands that are equally as beautiful and can offer a more authentic and relaxing experience.

New Orleans, Louisiana, USA

I think one traveler sums it up best by saying ” The French Quarter and Bourbon Street are littered with trash, vomit, and horse crap” and that’s before you factor in the heat and humidity, crime rate, and pricey hotel options.

Of course, Bourbon Street isn’t all of Nola and there are plenty of nicer neighborhoods to explore, if you planned on visiting to be in the action, you may be grossed out and disappointed.

Nassau, the Bahamas

A popular cruise destination, and easy weekend trip from Florida, Nassau is a busy city all year round. The crystal clear Bahamian waters and white sand beaches beckon travelers to come and visit.

Once they get there though, visitors are often turned off by the aggressive vendors, overcrowded beaches, and over-touristy feel of the city. I much prefer Bimini or Exuma to Nassau any day.
