1. Denver, Colorado

Denver, Colorado, also known as the Mile High City, is a paradise for outdoor lovers. Its proximity to the Rocky Mountains means there are countless hiking trails, top-notch ski resorts, great spots for rock climbing, and much more within a short drive to the city. People from all over the world come to explore Denver and its nearby mountain towns.

My husband and I fell in love with Denver after visiting so many times that we decided to move there. It’s the perfect place for outdoor adventures, and on top of that, it’s packed with amazing restaurants, shops, places to stay, and sports teams. Denver really has it all and is the perfect base to return to after a day full of adventure!

2. Asheville, North Carolina

Asheville holds a special place in my heart as one of the most charming mountain towns on the East Coast. While it’s famous for its numerous breweries, it’s also a haven for outdoor lovers due to its proximity to the Blue Ridge Mountains. 

In Asheville, you can indulge in various activities such as hiking, camping, cycling, fishing, kayaking, ziplining, and more. It is an ideal home base for adventurers seeking a smaller city experience with its quaint shops, top-notch hotels, diverse brewery scene, and delicious Southern cuisine.

3. Portland, Oregon

I love Portland, Oregon. The city has a quirky, funky vibe with fun food trucks, cozy bookstores, and a vibrant art scene. But did you know it’s also a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts? 

With hundreds of parks to explore, spending time outdoors in Portland is a breeze. Plus, it’s close to incredible mountains like Mount Hood, Mount Saint Helens, and Mount Adams, offering excellent hiking, skiing, and other activities. 

To top it off, Its proximity to the coast means you can easily visit beaches like Cannon Beach and Astoria. So, whether you’re into city parks, mountain adventures, or seaside escapes, Portland Oregon has it all for those who love the outdoors and a variety of activities and scenery.

4. Seattle, Washington

We can’t discuss U.S. cities for outdoor enthusiasts without mentioning Seattle, Washington. It’s famous for its coffee culture, Space Needle, tech industry, Pike Place Market, and art scene. But did you know that Seattle is also perfect for outdoor lovers? 

With nearly 500 parks in the city, it’s easy to enjoy the outdoors. Plus, there are two incredible volcanoes nearby—Mt. Rainier and Mt. Baker—ideal for road trips, hikes, and skiing. And let’s not forget the fantastic national parks throughout Washington, like Olympic, Mount Rainier, and North Cascades. You’ll never run out of outdoor adventures here. 

Just remember to pack a jacket, umbrella, and waterproof shoes, as you’ll likely experience some rain during your visit.

5. Reno, Nevada

The Reno area is known for two main attractions: its casinos and Lake Tahoe. While the gambling scene is popular, Lake Tahoe is my favorite reason to visit. Experiencing Lake Tahoe is truly special. 

Regardless of the season, there are endless outdoor adventures to enjoy in Reno. You can try boating, skiing, paddle boarding, or canoeing on the lake in the summer. Spring and fall are magnificent for hiking, and winter offers skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. 

The outdoor activities are limitless year-round, making it a dream destination for many outdoor enthusiasts, including myself!

6. Anchorage, Alaska

Another city we must mention for outdoor enthusiasts in the United States is Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city. This coastal city is renowned for its proximity to both mountains and the ocean, offering a perfect blend of mountain and seaside activities. You can appreciate various activities like hiking, skiing, kayaking, fishing, and more. 

Additionally, wildlife fans will be delighted to spot whales off the coast or observe animals like bears, bald eagles, moose, and wolves on land. If you’re seeking an adventure-filled escape outside the continental United States, Anchorage is undoubtedly the place to be.

7. Scottsdale, Arizona

I absolutely adore Scottsdale, Arizona. Located about 13 miles northeast of Phoenix, it has a charming small-town vibe compared to the larger city. What stands out most about Scottsdale is its relaxed atmosphere and outdoor adventures. Visitors love Scottsdale for its hiking trails, beautiful scenery, golf courses, and resorts. It’s the perfect all-around destination. 

What truly impressed me during my visit was the friendly spirit of both visitors and locals. If you’re seeking a funky place with outdoor adventures and a fun desert climate full of red rocks and cacti, look no further.

8. Lincoln, Nebraska

You might be surprised to find Lincoln, Nebraska, on this list; I certainly would’ve been until I visited the city a few weeks ago. I quickly fell in love with Lincoln’s small-town charm in its capital city setting with endless things to see and do.

Lincoln is known as Nebraska’s capital, home to unique museums and rich history. Many people think there’s nothing to do in America’s Midwest, but my visit proved otherwise. 

Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy the Pioneers Park Nature Center, which is filled with animals, ponds, and grassy areas that are perfect for exploring. Another unique experience is Robber’s Cave Tours, where you can explore caves with a guide and learn about their history.

For those who love plants and flowers, spending time at the Sunken Gardens is a must, with its vibrant blooms, waterfall, and fountain. While you won’t find massive volcanoes, tall mountains, or epic ski slopes, Lincoln still offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.

9. San Diego, California

When you think of San Diego, you probably imagine great surfing and awesome beaches. But did you know San Diego is also home to more than 400 parks? This means there are endless opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts, whether you prefer seaside escapes and sunshine or lush greenery and walking trails. 

For a mix of both, consider visiting Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. It’s among the best spots for seaside cliffs, nature trails, beaches, and breathtaking views. Keep an eye out—you might even catch a glimpse of whales passing by off the coast.

Moab, Utah, is a truly unique destination in the United States. It’s best known for Arches National Park, one of America’s most breathtaking parks, famous for its red rock formations and dramatic arches. Jackson Hole feels like a modern-day Western dream. My husband and I chose it for our honeymoon, and as soon as we stepped off the plane, I understood why people love it. 

The jagged Teton Mountains are right there, and the town square is full of inviting bars, restaurants, and shops. Beyond that, there are endless outdoor activities, including two nearby ski resorts, countless hiking trails, and two national parks—Yellowstone and Grand Teton—just down the road. You can also enjoy ATVing, horseback riding, fly fishing, and more. 

There’s never a dull moment, no matter when you visit. However, fall holds a special place in my heart. The vibrant foliage, perfect temperatures, and romantic activities make it truly unforgettable.

12. Bozeman, Montana

If you love the outdoors and have yet to go to Bozeman, consider this your sign to add it to your bucket list. Bozeman is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream. The city itself is full of charming shops, restaurants, and accommodations, but what truly sets it apart is its proximity to endless adventures. 

Whether you want to fish in the Gallatin River or unwind at the Bozeman Hot Springs, you also have the opportunity to explore Yellowstone National Park for stunning views, hiking trails, and wildlife, or head to Big Sky for world-class skiing. Ultimately, Bozeman is an excellent destination for all things outdoors.

13. Boise, Idaho

Boise, Idaho, is one of those hidden treasures out West that people are starting to discover, yet it remains under the radar enough to avoid the crowds found in cities like Seattle, Denver, or San Diego. This makes it perfect for outdoor enthusiasts seeking a similar vibe without the masses.

If you don’t mind a short drive, you can take advantage of excellent hiking trails as well as skiing and snowboarding spots.

Little Rock is another destination on this list that might surprise you. Many people aren’t sure what to expect from Arkansas, but having visited the state on a road trip, I know there’s so much to explore.

With over 60 parks in the area, it’s easy to get outside and enjoy the unique terrain and trails. One of the most significant advantages of visiting Little Rock is that it’s not widely known among outdoor enthusiasts, so you’ll encounter fewer crowds on the trails compared to more popular cities like Denver.

15. Boulder, Colorado

I’ve visited Boulder countless times, and each visit leaves me with unforgettable memories. Boulder is known for the beautiful University of Colorado Boulder campus, but it also boasts a charming town with a fun and quirky vibe. 

The downtown area is full of shops and restaurants with plenty of outdoor seating, and the mountains are practically at its doorstep, making it an ideal destination for outdoor adventures. The Flatirons are just down the road, and Eldora Mountain is only a few miles away, offering easy access to hiking and skiing. 

Plus, Boulder is famous for its 300+ days of sunshine, making it perfect for outdoor lovers who want to enjoy the great outdoors and soak up some sunshine year-round.

16. San Francisco, California

If you’re a history buff like me and want to combine history with outdoor time, be sure to check out the Freedom Trail, a 2.5-mile route connecting over 15 historic sites. For more typical outdoor activities, Boston is perfect for strolling around parks and spending time on the harbor.

20. Gatlinburg, Tennessee

This list wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Gatlinburg, Tennessee. This charming mountain town is right next to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, making it the perfect home base for exploring the park. 

Gatlinburg and its surrounding areas are ideal for scenic road trips, hiking, camping, and enjoying the beautiful forested scenery. I recommend visiting in the autumn when the foliage is spectacular. Just be sure to watch out for bears, as it’s not uncommon to see them roaming around.
