15 Best Countries For Hiking Around The World
Few experiences match the thrill of hiking in a new place. The effort to reach the summit makes the stunning, unfamiliar scenery even more rewarding.
As a passionate hiker, I love discovering different trails and taking in unique views of new destinations. If you enjoy traveling and hiking like I do, I’ve compiled a list of the best countries in the world for great hikes.
1. United States

First on this list, without a doubt, is the United States. You’ll find thousands of hiking trails from the East Coast to the West Coast. While I could talk all day about the unique hiking experiences in each state, I’ll keep it short and highlight some of my favorites.
Whether it’s exploring the lush greenery, waterfalls, and mountain peaks of Pisgah National Forest near Asheville, North Carolina, or tackling iconic trails in world-famous national parks like Yosemite’s Half Dome or Zion’s Angels Landing, the U.S. offers countless incredible hiking options.
2. Norway

Next on the list is the stunning country of Norway, known for its friendly locals, charming seaside towns, and breathtaking mountain views. It’s an ideal destination for hiking enthusiasts.
Some of the best trails can be found in Dovrefjell-Sunndalsfjella National Park, or if you’re seeking an iconic experience, take the hike to Trolltunga, where you can perch on a rocky cliff overlooking the water. Throughout Norway, you’ll find countless options offering a mix of mountain peaks, lush greenery, water features, and picturesque towns.
3. Chile

Chile is a fantastic destination for hiking. Patagonia is the most popular spot for its sharp, snow-covered peaks, rivers, glaciers, and lush landscapes. It’s a breathtaking area that’s on many hikers’ bucket lists.
Specifically, an excellent hiking spot in the Patagonia area is Torres del Paine National Park. With its stunning mountain peaks and alpine lakes, you’re sure to have an amazing experience.
4. Argentina

Patagonia spans Chile and Argentina, so I highlighted both countries as top hiking destinations. Argentina, in particular, offers incredible hiking opportunities, especially in Los Glaciares National Park.
This UNESCO World Heritage Site is known for its stunning glaciers and mountain views. It’s an ideal spot for hikers to explore and fully appreciate the region’s natural beauty.
5. Peru

Peru is one of the world’s most iconic hiking destinations, mainly because of the renowned Inca Trail, which leads to the Wonder of the World, Machu Picchu.
This legendary trek, usually four days and three nights, is a bucket-list adventure for many travelers and offers a unique way to reach the famous site of Machu Picchu. Peru is the ultimate destination for passionate hikers seeking lush landscapes, breathtaking mountain scenery, and ancient Incan ruins.
6. Switzerland

When I first visited Switzerland, I was blown away by its stunning mountains. They’re tall and lush, with rivers and lakes adding to the dramatic scenery. Although Switzerland is known for its winter snow and skiing, it’s also amazing when the greenery shines in the summer.
During this time, there are countless hiking trails to explore, whether trekking through the Swiss Alps or wandering around picturesque towns like Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen. The hiking options are endless and always rewarding.
7. New Zealand

New Zealand deserves a spot on this curated list for its incredible hiking opportunities. Known for its breathtaking trails, the country offers short day hikes and renowned multi-day treks involving backcountry camping.
Visit Egmont National Park or Mount Aspiring National Park for stunning views and various options. Both are packed with mountains, lush greenery, and memorable water features that will leave a lasting impression.
8. Tanzania

Tanzania is a top hiking destination in Africa. It is famous for Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain on the continent. The trek to the summit usually takes 5 to 9 days and is known worldwide for its challenge and beauty.
If you’re looking for something a bit easier, plenty of shorter hikes in Kilimanjaro National Park don’t reach the summit. You can also check out Arusha National Park, where Mount Meru offers a scenic hike and opportunities to see wildlife.
9. Nepal

A list of top hiking countries would only be complete with mentioning Nepal, famous for being home to Mount Everest, the tallest mountain in the world. Many hikers dream of trekking to Everest Base Camp, a challenging but shorter trek that is on many bucket lists. For those with the time and stamina to summit Everest itself, it takes about two months to complete.
If you prefer to avoid Everest, Nepal offers other fantastic hiking opportunities, such as the Annapurna Conservation Area, which features excellent trails varying in length and difficulty, each providing stunning views.
10. Austria

Austria is one of Europe’s most beautiful countries, and I was amazed by its stunning mountains as soon as I arrived in Innsbruck.
While you can enjoy hikes from the cities, I suggest heading to the Austrian Alps to really take in the country’s breathtaking scenery and hiking opportunities.
11. Spain

One of the best things about Spain is its diverse landscape. While it’s known for its beautiful coastlines, Spain actually offers a bit of everything. You can explore islands like Majorca or Tenerife, where you’ll find a mix of coastal and mountain hiking, or stay on the mainland and hike in areas like the Pyrenees, with its lush greenery, mountains, and waterfalls.
The country offers countless hiking opportunities, and the best part is that once you finish your trek, you can head into town to enjoy tasty tapas, refreshing sangria, and more. It’s truly the best of both worlds.
12. Canada

To me, Canada is one of the most underrated travel destinations. Yet, it’s one of the most epic places to visit, especially since it’s just a short trip from the U.S. I recently visited Banff National Park and was blown away by the stunning mountains and scenery. While Banff offers some of the best hiking in Canada, the entire country has incredible hiking opportunities.
Other top spots include Jasper National Park, the East Coast Trail in Newfoundland and Labrador, and many more. It’s a fantastic destination for those who want to stay close to the U.S. but still want to experience breathtaking mountains and beautiful alpine lakes in a new country.
13. Italy

Italy is one of my favorite countries. While most people associate it with its incredible food and rich history, it also offers some truly spectacular hiking opportunities.
Whether you’re interested in coastal hikes in picturesque towns like Cinque Terre or the Amalfi Coast or prefer the rugged mountain landscapes of the Italian Dolomites, Italy has endless options for hikers. Plus, there’s no better way to combine a rewarding workout with stunning views and then retreat to town to indulge in divine food and wine!
14. Iceland

Iceland is often celebrated for its glaciers, Northern Lights, ice climbing, and vibrant seaside towns, but it’s also a fantastic destination for hiking. If you’re keen on hitting the trails, visit during the summer when the weather is milder, as winter can be harsh with strong winds, snow, and frigid temperatures.
In summer, you can embark on epic hikes leading to legendary waterfalls like Skógafoss, Öxarárfoss, and many more. Iceland is a paradise for those who love lush landscapes, dramatic rock formations, waterfalls, and so much more.
15. Sweden

Sweden is one of Europe’s most underrated countries. It’s famous for its friendly locals, a blend of traditional and modern architecture, unique cuisine, winter displays of the Northern Lights, and entrepreneurial spirit.
However, people need to realize that it’s also a fantastic hiking destination, with its mountains, lakes, lush greenery, and breathtaking scenery. For some of the best hiking experiences, be sure to explore Abisko National Park or Sarek National Park, both of which are rich in lakes, greenery, and mountains.
